A Canadian’s Journey to Retirement in France

Sintra

Sintra

Sintra. The mere mention of its name evokes a universal response – WOW. This enchanting town northwest of Lisbon, nestled in the hills of Portugal is a true gem, captivating visitors with its romantic allure and breathtaking scenery. If you plan to visit Sintra, I will share some invaluable suggestions and tips to make the most of your experience.

  • Travelling to Sintra:

When travelling to Sintra from Lisbon, opt for the convenient train journey. Boarding at the Rossio train station, which is a mere 15-minute walk from most accommodations in the area, provides a hassle-free and economical option. With the cost averaging around 2.40 euros, the journey, meticulously timed to the second, takes approximately 41 minutes. There’s no need to fuss over Uber or alternate transportation options when the train offers such ease and comfort.

For those considering a guided tour, numerous local tour companies, such as those found on Get Your Guide, offer small-group excursions that eliminate the guesswork and ensure a memorable experience. The first time I visited Sinta, I used a group tour.

  • Exploring the Pena Palace

Upon arrival in Sintra, visiting the iconic Pena Palace is a must. To streamline your experience and avoid delays, I recommend purchasing tickets online in advance. This crucial step secures your entry but also allows the option to select transport from the park entrance to the palace gate for a nominal fee of 3 euros per person round trip. Trust me; it’s a decision you won’t regret.

Be mindful of the terrain; what Europeans may casually refer to as a “hill,” may resemble a mountain to those hailing from North America’s east coast. Opting for the transport service can save valuable time and energy, ensuring you’re ready to immerse yourself fully in the palace’s splendour, the grounds and the neighbouring castles.

If you’re venturing inside the palace, arrive at least an hour before your scheduled entry time. You cannot avoid the queues to enter as tourists begin lining up 20 minutes in advance. There is no imminent need because everyone with a timed ticket will be able to enter. If the weather is conducive, take advantage of the surrounding gardens, which offer a tranquil oasis of lush greenery and architectural wonders. To walk the entire Park, you will need 3 hours. Keep an eye on the time if you have other tickets scheduled.

  • Beyond the Palace: Monserrate Palace & Park

While the Pena Palace undoubtedly steals the spotlight, Sintra boasts other attractions worthy of exploring. Quinta da Regaleira, with its enchanting gardens and captivating architecture, is an experience that cannot be forgotten. It is one of three must-visit destinations when in Sintra.

Despite the weather, our visit to Monserrate Palace & Park was a highlight of our trip. This beautifully restored palace, surrounded by exotic gardens, offers a fascinating glimpse into Moorish and Indian architecture and design. While it’s a bit farther from the other attractions, the quickest way to get there is by taking an Uber. On our journey, we encountered a closed road, which extended our travel time to about 35 minutes along a winding route. However, this unexpected detour had a silver lining – we arrived to find the Palace and Park virtually empty due to the weather and distance from other tourist spots. That allowed us to enjoy an exclusive experience, with every photo opportunity devoid of other visitors. Additionally, we had ample time to explore the property and watch informative videos about its history and previous owners. The ticket price at the gate is 12 euros for adults, but if you have a Lisboa Card, you’ll receive a 15% discount.

Sintra is a destination that truly lives up to its reputation. Whether wandering through the halls of the Pena Palace or exploring the hidden treasures of Quinta da Regaleira, every moment in this magical town is guaranteed to leave you spellbound. So, pack your bags, embark on this enchanting adventure, and prepare to be captivated by the wonders of Sintra.
