A Canadian’s Journey to Retirement in France

The Conundrum of Shipping vs. Buying a Car in France

As I embark on my exciting relocation to France, I’m faced with a crucial decision regarding my transportation. This week, I’ve started diligently researching options for shipping my personal belongings, including my car, from Canada to France. Despite reaching out to several shipping companies, obtaining clear information about the process and associated costs has proven to be quite challenging.

My car is just one piece of the puzzle. Given that my pension will be modest, financial awareness is crucial for me. According to my calculations, shipping my current SUV will cost approximately CAD 7,001.98, including Canadian taxes (as of February 2024). However, I’m wary of potential extra charges in France, despite my efforts to account for local taxes in the total amount. Reviews from other clients have cast doubt on the transparency and honesty of shipping companies in general. Considering the potential stress involved, I have to remain mindful of this factor in any decision I make.

So, I began to explore the possibility of purchasing a car in France to broaden my options. While I’m drawn to the vintage charm of cars like the Panhard PL 17, I’m also considering other choices within my budget. The Panhard PL 17, a relic of automotive history produced from 1959 to 1965, is beloved for its sleek design and nostalgic appeal, which I adore. Similarly, the luxurious 1964 Citroën 2CV AZAM, part of Citroën’s legendary 2CV lineup, offers comfort and style, representing the epitome of French automotive craftsmanship. Each car, whether the rugged Citroen 2CV AK 400 or the lavish 2CV AZAM, has its draw and potential.

While vintage cars hold a special appeal for me, practicality remains paramount. I need a car with enough trunk space to transport furniture and vintage finds, while also prioritizing reliability and cost-effectiveness. I must admit, I’m tremendously tempted by the nostalgia of a restored classic and the romanticism it evokes in my mind.

Considering the high mileage and age of cars within the price range equal to the shipping fees, transporting my current vehicle and caring for it long-term seems like the most sensible and possibly affordable option of the two. It does involve additional costs for a car that will be paid in full once I am ready to move but, in the long run, it will minimize the hassle of purchasing and evaluating a car upon arrival. Paying upfront will eliminate distractions from potentially tempting deals or charming vintage cars awaiting restoration—a weakness of mine!

Before making any final decisions, however, I’ll need to conduct additional research to ensure a smooth transition. When I find the right company to ship the car and make the payment, I assure you that I will document the entire process and the total amount paid, both when the car leaves my possession and when it is returned to me. The next step is to determine the cost of license conversion, insurance, and registration once in France. This information is pending for now!

Join me on this adventure of international relocation as I conquer the challenges and embark on a new chapter in France – with my trusty car in tow! Until next time.

A bientôt!
