A Canadian’s Journey to Retirement in France

Embracing a New Chapter: Exploring the Communes of Normandy

Setting off on an adventure to a new country feels like jumping into a vibrant painting, where every little detail adds to the overall vibe. There’s something about the journey that’s both exhilarating and nerve-wracking, but oh-so exciting!

Among the heap of regions calling out with their charm, Normandy holds a special place in my heart. It’s like the cozy corner of a favourite café – inviting, warm, and full of promise. I have my sights set on this gem, hoping to strike gold in my property hunt.

As I dive into the search for my dream home I can’t help but be drawn to the rustic beauty of Normandy. It’s like stumbling upon a hidden treasure chest in a vast, green field. The communes are straight out of a postcard, and the rolling countryside feels like a warm hug from Mother Nature herself. This is where I want to put down roots, where every sunrise feels like a blessing, and every sunset whispers tales of serenity.

Bayeux:

  • Nestled in the heart of Calvados, Bayeux exudes charm with its medieval streets and half-timbered houses. But what truly sets Bayeux apart is its famed Bayeux Tapestry, a masterpiece of medieval art depicting the Norman conquest of England. History comes alive as you stroll through the town’s cobblestone streets, making Bayeux a magnet for history enthusiasts and culture aficionados alike.

Honfleur:

  • Situated on the estuary where the Seine meets the English Channel, Honfleur is a gem of a town celebrated for its scenic beauty and maritime heritage. The old port, with its colourful quayside buildings and bobbing boats, has inspired countless artists over the years, including Claude Monet and Eugène Boudin. With its bustling markets, art galleries, and seafood restaurants serving up the freshest catches, Honfleur offers a quintessentially Norman experience. I will add a blog entry on some of the delicious restaurants in the village.

Mont Saint-Michel:

  • Rising like a fairytale castle from the shores of the Normandy coast, Mont Saint-Michel is truly a sight to behold. This UNESCO World Heritage site is steeped in history and legend, its abbey perched atop a rocky island surrounded by swirling tides. Whether shrouded in fog or basking in the glow of sunset, Mont Saint-Michel casts a spell on all who visit.

Deauville and Trouville-sur-Mer:

  • These neighbouring seaside towns offer a blend of glamour, charm, and relaxation. Deauville is known for its elegant casino, horse racing events, and luxury boutiques, while Trouville-sur-Mer retains a more laid-back vibe with its fishing port, colourful beach huts, and seafood restaurants.

Étretat:

  • Famous for its stunning cliffs and natural arches carved by the sea, Étretat is a picturesque village on the Alabaster Coast. Artists such as Claude Monet were drawn to its breathtaking landscapes, and today visitors come to admire its beauty and explore the scenic hiking trails along the cliffs. The town is so quaint, with many shops and restaurants to enjoy after a long walk.

Whether you’re exploring the winding streets of a medieval town or gazing out at the endless expanse of the sea, may you discover moments of wonder, serenity, and joy in this beloved corner of France.

A bientôt.
