Relocating to a new country, especially in retirement, is a big decision filled with both practical considerations and deep emotions. While many Canadians may see France as an idyllic escape, my choice to move here was a thoughtful one, driven by a longing for a slower, more fulfilling lifestyle.
Family ties were at the forefront of my decision-making process. With loved ones back in Canada, it was essential for me to have easy access to flights to stay connected. France’s reliable transportation network, with daily flights to and from Canada, struck the perfect balance, ensuring I could visit my family frequently without the stress of long journeys.
Although I once fancied the idea of settling in the Canadian countryside, the harsh winters and soaring living costs turned that dream cold.

France’s temperate climate and rich cultural tapestry, steeped in history and architectural marvels, drew me in. The allure of exploring Europe’s diverse regions, from Provence’s rolling hills to the majestic Alps, only added to the appeal.
One aspect of European life that resonates deeply with me is the concept of slow living, embodied by the café culture prevalent in France. Unlike the hustle and bustle of North America, Europeans take time to savour meals, linger over coffee, and simply enjoy the moment. This emphasis on mindful living aligns perfectly with my desire for a more intentional lifestyle.

Having experienced the vibrant community spirit of Asia, I longed to recapture that sense of connectedness in my daily life. The isolation of Canadian winters left me yearning for more vibrant surroundings, where each day is embraced with enthusiasm and zest.
With my children independent, the timing felt right to embark on this new adventure. Starting afresh in my 50s, building new connections, and exploring unfamiliar cities fills me with excitement and anticipation. I refuse to let fear or complacency hold me back from pursuing a dream that has lingered in my mind since my youth.
In choosing France as my new home, I’m seeking more than just a change of scenery; I’m embracing a new way of life. A life where time is enjoyed, connections are cherished, and each day is an opportunity for growth and discovery. As I embark on this journey, I’m filled with gratitude for the life I’ve lived so far and eagerness for the possibilities that lie ahead. France, with its beauty and promise of a slower pace, feels like the perfect canvas on which to paint the next chapter of my life.
A bientôt.
