Welcome to Maple to Marais, where the house hunt is on! I’m thrilled to share that I have finally found an agent, and his name is Patrick. I’m convinced we’re destined to be best friends. I reached out to about 20 agents and companies across France, and Patrick was the only one who responded. Not just in English. The only one who responded. Period. Now, we all know the French can be a bit particular about their language, but that’s part of their charm, isn’t it?
Imagine my surprise when, after meticulously crafting emails in both English and French, offering to communicate in either language, I received no response from the agents I contacted. Perhaps they’re still sifting through their inbox, or maybe they’re simply too swamped to take on new clients. Regardless, I’m grateful to have Patrick on my side. I don’t need many agents, I just need one who is dedicated.
Patrick works with a UK-based company that collaborates with local agents in France, and the best part? It’s a complimentary service for me. With over 20 years of experience, they’re well-equipped to help me find my dream home. Despite my initial apprehension about bombarding Patrick with lengthy emails, I soon realized he is probably accustomed to dealing with eager expats or at least he has a soft spot for lost souls like me.
Armed with Patrick’s expertise and my wild imagination, we are officially on the hunt for the ultimate fairy-tale dwelling. Think rolling hills, charming villages straight out of a storybook, and maybe, just maybe, a castle in the clouds (I can dream, right?). And let’s not forget about my penchant for falling head over heels for houses faster than you can say “mon dieu”!

So, I have tasked Patrick with scouring properties in Lower Normandy and the eastern regions of France, keeping our options open for that elusive “perfect” spot. From villages with bustling markets to quaint cottages with a bit of land for a garden and a workshop, my wish list is clear. Two bedrooms, one bathroom, and an atelier for all my DIY dreams… Oh, and did I mention I’m toying with the idea of a gîte? Because why settle for one dream home when you can have two?
As I eagerly await Patrick’s next response, I am so excited for this house-hunting journey. While some may view my enthusiasm as slightly eccentric, I firmly believe in following my heart, even if it leads me to fall in love with a house at first sight.
So, until I hear back from Patrick and embark on our house-hunting adventure in September, I will be here in freezing, snowy Canada, ready to share every twist and turn with you. Stay tuned for more updates as our story unfolds!
A bientôt.
